How Yoga Helps My Bipolar Disorder
People all over the world choose yoga for both physical and emotional wellness, but as a woman with bipolar I discovered some additional benefits that really helped me manage my condition.
It’s the one thing I do to calm and get grounded when I am up and when I am low it helps me find some peace, raising my mood faster than without my practice.
If you suffer with bipolar disorder you will try anything to regain some control over your life, just to get through the day.
Bipolar ran my life from work to relationships, it controlled how I cared for myself, or didn’t, how I managed money and basically my entire life. I was medicated to the max and I was desperate to find natural ways to get help and yoga fit the bill.
How Yoga Helped My Bipolar Disorder
If you have bipolar disorder you know the pain, the mood swings, the highs the lows and everything in between and you rarely feel the calm you crave.
Yoga brought calm to the overwhelm and out of control feelings.
It restores my confidence that I CAN get thing right.
It helped me focus so I got the clarity I needed to make better decisions.
It helped bring some normalcy in the chaos.
I felt fitter, stronger and more balanced physically and emotionally.
And so much more
When calm is restored there is the ability to get much achieved. A few minutes for daily yoga and meditation are both highly recommended but everyone but for people with “bp” there are benefits beyond measure.
Can Yoga Help All Types of Bipolar
There are several types of bipolar disorder with varying degrees for individuals. While I prefer not to place people in a box, the Medical Society organizes and names disorders into levels. Here are some of the terms used to describe Bipolar Types. Type 1, Type 2, Rapid Cycling, Mix and Cyclothymiacs.
The moods swings that are experienced are due to an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. When a person suffers from bipolar disorder, they go though alterations in their neurotransmitters which have an effect on their mental state.
Stress can add to bipolar symptoms; using yoga and meditation can help bring the body and mind into balance.
Why Yoga for Bipolar Disorders
Many people think about yoga for exercises but yoga is so much more also used as a meditative practice which integrates breathing exercise. Being able to regulate your breathing when you are in a situation or frame of mind that is particularly stressful, breath will bring oxygen to your brain and help to bring calm naturally.
Breath helps anxiety and depression which can be part of bipolar symptoms and its a natural way to help soothe mood changes. Meditation and yoga helps with mindfulness, which can help organization and bring order into a somewhat chaotic life.
Once you gain control over parts of your life you will realize results you have wanted in your daily life for so long.
